Buying an LED light bar? Choose the right LED light bar for your vehicle
An LED light bar is one of the most popular ways to add extra lighting to your vehicle. Technically speaking, an LED light bar is a type of driving light, but its distinctive elongated shape makes it a product category of its own. While a traditional driving light is usually round, square or rectangular, an LED light bar consists of multiple powerful LEDs distributed across the full width of the housing.
This design offers several interesting advantages. Because the LEDs are positioned across the entire width of the light bar, you often get not only plenty of light directly ahead, but also a good spread towards the sides. This means that on dark roads you can see clearly what is happening well ahead of you while also keeping an eye on obstacles, bends and the roadside.
However, not all LED light bars are the same. You can choose from different beam patterns, shapes, lengths and configurations. While some drivers are looking for maximum range, others want the widest possible beam pattern or a discreet installation. By considering how and where you will use the LED light bar beforehand, it becomes much easier to choose the right one.
Choose the right beam pattern for your LED light bar
Although the vast majority of LED light bars have a driving or driving spot combo beam pattern, not every LED light bar produces the same type of light. The design of the reflectors and LEDs determines how the light is distributed. Some LED light bars are designed primarily for maximum range, while others spread more light towards the sides.
The best beam pattern for you therefore mainly depends on where and how you drive.
The most versatile choice for road use. A driving LED light bar combines good forward range with sufficient spread towards the sides.
Do you mainly want to see as far ahead as possible? Then a spot or hyperspot LED light bar is often the right choice. The light is concentrated into a much tighter beam, allowing for a very long range.
A wide beam LED light bar is designed to spread as much light as possible to the sides and around the vehicle. This allows you to see not only what is happening directly ahead, but also keep a close eye on the roadside and surrounding areas.
Not every LED light bar is designed to shine as far ahead as possible at high speeds. For work vehicles and machinery, it can be more important to illuminate the immediate surroundings as widely as possible.
Choose the right shape and configuration for your LED light bar
The shape of an LED light bar affects not only its appearance, but also how and where you can mount it. The available space on your vehicle also plays an important role.
Straight or curved LED light bar?
A straight LED light bar is the most popular option. Its sleek and usually flat housing makes it easy to mount on flat surfaces. Examples include a number plate holder, bull bar, bumper or the roof of a vehicle.
Straight LED light bars are also often chosen for a neat installation in the grille. This is particularly popular on modern passenger cars and commercial vehicles, as the lighting can be almost completely hidden from view. For various vehicles, we even offer specific grille kits that allow the LED light bar to be neatly fitted behind the grille.
Do you have a vehicle with lots of curved lines and want the lighting to follow them neatly? Then a curved LED light bar could be an interesting option. A curved LED light bar follows the natural contours of, for example, a front bumper or the roofline of a vehicle. Besides its streamlined appearance, this design often also helps spread the light slightly further towards the sides.

Single row or double row LED light bar?
A single row LED light bar has one row of LED chips, giving it an especially slim profile. This makes single row LED light bars very popular for discreet installations in the grille of modern vehicles, where available space is often limited.
Despite their compact size, high-quality single row LED light bars can still produce an impressive amount of light. Another advantage is that the slim housing creates little air resistance, making them an interesting choice when the LED light bar is mounted in a location where airflow has a greater impact.
If space is not an issue and maximum light output is your priority, a double row LED light bar is an interesting choice. These models have two rows of LED chips positioned one above the other, allowing a greater amount of light to be produced from a single light bar.
Double row LED light bars are therefore particularly popular on larger vehicles such as 4x4s, off-road vehicles, trucks and other vehicles where a larger LED light bar suits the overall appearance.
Where should you mount an LED light bar?
The right mounting position for an LED light bar has a surprisingly large impact on the end result. It affects not only the appearance, but also the range, protection, aerodynamics and visibility in poor weather conditions.
In or behind the grille
Discreetly installing an LED light bar in or behind the grille is one of the most popular solutions for passenger cars and modern commercial vehicles. The biggest advantage is, of course, the clean finish. When the lighting is switched off, the LED light bar is barely noticeable, allowing you to retain an almost factory-original appearance.
The grille also provides additional protection against stone chips, branches and other external influences. An integrated LED light bar is also less accessible, which is another advantage if you want to protect the lighting as well as possible.
Another benefit is that mounting the light bar within the bodywork creates little air resistance and reduces the chance of whistling or wind noise. This can make a significant difference at higher speeds compared with an LED light bar mounted on top of the roof.
The downside is that installing an LED light bar in the grille often requires a little more work. In some cases, space needs to be created between the grille slats or a special grille kit is required. You are also limited by the height of the grille, which generally means a shorter range than with an LED light bar mounted higher up on the vehicle.

On the front bumper or number plate holder
Want to mount an LED light bar without making major modifications to your vehicle? Mounting it on the front bumper or number plate holder is a quick and universal solution.
With a dedicated number plate holder with LED light bar or a suitable bull bar, you can easily add extra lighting to the front of your vehicle. Because you are not limited by the restricted space available in a grille, you can often choose a larger or wider model.
A low mounting position also has a practical advantage in fog or blowing snow. Because the LED light bar is mounted lower, the light can shine underneath these conditions, reducing the chance of a reflective wall of light directly in front of the vehicle.
The downside is that a low mounting position is more sensitive to bumps and uneven surfaces. These can be projected onto the road as long shadows. The range is also usually slightly shorter than when the LED light bar is mounted higher up on the vehicle.
Finally, the LED light bar is positioned right at the front of the vehicle. This makes it more vulnerable to stone chips, parking damage and minor impacts.
On the roof above the windscreen
Mounting an LED light bar above the windscreen is particularly common on 4x4s, pickups, trucks and agricultural machinery. By positioning the LED light bar as high as possible on the vehicle, the light has a clear path ahead and is less affected by obstacles that could block the light directly in front of the vehicle.
A higher mounting position can therefore provide a greater range. The roof is also an ideal location if you choose a large or curved LED light bar that follows the lines of the vehicle.
One downside of roof mounting is the effect of airflow. At higher speeds, an LED light bar can cause wind noise in the form of whistling or rushing air. A slim LED light bar is therefore often a better choice if you spend a lot of time on the motorway.
Light can also reflect back onto the bonnet when the LED light bar is mounted on the roof. This is particularly noticeable if the light bar is positioned too far forward or angled too steeply downwards.

On the side or rear
An LED light bar does not always have to be mounted at the front of a vehicle. On agricultural machinery, trucks, motorhomes and other vehicles, side or rear lighting can be particularly practical.
For agricultural machinery, for example, an LED light bar mounted on the side is ideal when you need to work efficiently after dark. By spreading the light across a large part of the field, you have a clear view of your work area around the machine without constantly having to change the direction of the vehicle or lighting.
This type of installation is also widely used on trucks. Especially on trucks with a long, low trailer, an LED light bar mounted on the side or rear can provide good illumination across the entire trailer. This gives you a clear view around the trailer after dark and makes it easier to load, unload or carry out other tasks.
For motorhomes, there are also LED light bars with a dimming function. These models can be operated at a lower percentage of their maximum output, producing a much softer light. This allows you to create a pleasant glow along the side of the motorhome, providing enough light to sit outside in the evening or carry out some work without having to use the LED light bar at full power.
Legislation and E-mark approval for LED light bars
The most important thing to consider before buying an LED light bar is where and how you intend to use it. If you want to use the LED light bar on public roads, it must comply with the applicable European regulations.
ECE R112 – approved for additional high beam
An LED light bar used as an additional high beam on public roads must have ECE R112 approval. You can identify this by the E-mark on the light.
This certification confirms that the beam pattern meets the applicable European requirements. The LED light bar must also be connected so that it switches on together with the vehicle's standard high beam and switches off again when the high beam is dipped.
ECE R10 – protection against interference
In addition to approval for the beam pattern, ECE R10 is also important. This certification relates to electromagnetic compatibility.
In practice, this means that the LED light bar must not cause unwanted interference with the vehicle's electronics. This could include the radio, onboard computer or CAN-bus system.
LED light bars with position light and strobe function
LED light bars are no longer used solely for additional lighting. More and more modern models feature additional functions that allow you to further customise their appearance or visibility.
LED light bar with position light
A position light is an additional lighting function integrated into the LED light bar and operated at a lower light intensity. Its purpose is not to illuminate further ahead, but to make the vehicle more visible.
Duo-colour position lighting is particularly popular. This usually allows you to choose between bright white and amber. White creates a modern appearance, while amber stands out more and is widely used on trucks, 4x4s and show vehicles.

LED light bar with strobe function
An LED light bar with an integrated strobe function can flash the LEDs according to different patterns. This means you do not need a separate strobe light or beacon light when your vehicle is equipped for this type of application.
Strobe functions are particularly popular on work vehicles, service vehicles, off-road vehicles and vehicles used at events.
Please note that a strobe function cannot simply be used on public roads. Additional requirements apply to official use, and in certain situations ECE R65 approval is required.
How to connect an LED light bar
Because an LED light bar requires considerably more power than standard lighting, you cannot simply connect it directly to the existing headlight wiring. A safe installation therefore uses a relay, fuse and suitable wiring.
The simplest solution is to use a complete wiring kit. This gives you all the essential components you need for a proper connection in one package.
On modern vehicles, the installation can be a little more complicated. Cars, commercial vehicles and trucks with factory-fitted LED or Xenon lighting increasingly use a CAN-bus system or digital control.
In these cases, you cannot always simply tap the high beam signal directly from the headlight wiring. A CAN-bus interface or contactless signal reader such as CanM8 can provide a solution. This allows you to read the high beam signal without modifying the vehicle's original wiring or causing warning lights or other faults on the dashboard.
Quality, materials and water resistance
An LED light bar mounted on the outside of a vehicle has to withstand a lot. Stone chips, mud, rain, sand and dirt are all conditions that the housing needs to withstand.
That is why most high-quality LED light bars feature an aluminium housing with a corrosion-resistant finish. This not only provides a strong construction, but also helps protect the electronics and LEDs.
The lens also plays an important role. Many high-quality LED light bars feature a polycarbonate lens. This material is strong and highly resistant to external influences.
IP rating of an LED light bar
Because an LED light bar is regularly exposed to water and dirt, the IP rating is an important specification to consider. This classification indicates how well the housing is protected against dust and water.
LED light bars often have high IP ratings. Models with an IP68 rating are completely dust-tight and resistant to prolonged immersion in water. An LED light bar with an IP69K rating also offers a very high level of protection against high-pressure water, making it particularly suitable for vehicles that are regularly exposed to demanding conditions.
If you regularly drive off-road, travel through muddy terrain or clean your vehicle with a pressure washer, it is therefore worth paying close attention to the IP rating of the LED light bar you choose.
Frequently asked questions about LED light bars
This varies depending on the LED light bar. Many models include mounting brackets as standard, but this is not the case for every model. Always check the product specifications of the LED light bar before placing your order.
Yes, with many LED light bars you can still adjust the angle after installation using the supplied mounting brackets. This allows you to fine-tune the beam and prevent the light from shining too high, too low or off to the side of the road.
Temperature differences can sometimes cause a small amount of condensation to form inside the LED light bar. In many cases, this is harmless and will disappear on its own.
For example, you can leave the LED light bar switched on for around 30 minutes, then switch it off for 30 minutes and repeat the process once more. The heat generated by the light will usually evaporate the moisture naturally.
Does the condensation keep coming back or is there a noticeable amount of moisture inside the light bar? Please contact us so we can help you investigate the issue.
